An exciting, challenging and unique fundraiser for Parkinson’s disease will take place the entire month of August on Vermont’s 273 mile Long Trail.  People from all over Vermont and the surrounding areas, who are living with this disease, will hike a portion of this amazing natural treasure.  We hope to raise awareness of Parkinson’s as well as funds to help the thousands of Vermonters and families whose lives are affected by PD.

Parkinson’s disease is the second most common, progressive, neurodegenerative disorder of the brain.  People with PD develop tremors, stiffness, slowness of movement, balance issues, and, frequently, depression, confusion and difficulty speaking and swallowing.   In the worst cases, they become prisoners in their own bodies.

Exercise is one of the main ways to combat this incurable illness.  Current studies are showing that walking, dancing and bicycling are proving to be very beneficial to PD patients.  It is believed chemicals are released that help with motor functions.  What better way to inspire people to keep their bodies in motion than by encouraging them to exercise and giving them opportunities to do so?

Below is a note from Jocelyn:

"My name is Jocelyn Hebert.  I am a life-long Vermonter and daughter of a special person, who bravely lived with Parkinson’s disease for ten years. I hiked the Long Trail in one continuous hike during the summer of 2007. This time I will be meeting and guiding people with PD, their caregivers, family and friends along the trail as they ‘hike’ whatever distance they are capable of, whether that means ten feet or ten miles. The intention is to encourage and support an opportunity to get outside and enjoy the beauty of Vermont and each other.

Thank you for your interest in this adventure and being involved in a caring community.  It will make a very real difference in the lives of people in Vermont who are living with Parkinson’s.  Your contribution and support can help Move Mountains.

I have dedicated this hike to my late father, Peter J. Hebert, so I consider this a personal journey as well as a privilege.

Sincerely,

Jocelyn Hebert
